[SHADEGARDENS] Tree chippings

Nancy Swell's recommendation to invite tree workers to dump chips is a
terrific one for folks without enough compost. We did that last year,
adding some extra nitrogen to the chips (as Nancy also recommends), and
we are happy indeed with the results. Companies in our area are more
than willing to help out occasionally because that saves them the $35
tip fee at our town recycling plant.
For some odd reason, the common wisdom of not using fresh chips as
mulch on the flower beds didn't seem to hold here. In one case, we used
fresh arbor vitae chips and the beds did just fine. Though we will be
using fresh chips on paths, too, we won't hesitate to use fresh
cedary-type chips on the beds this year either.
