Hi, Nancy. Is there something you treat the wood chips with before you lay
them out? I ask because in my area, even a small collection of sticks will
attract earwigs, pill bugs, and even termites (if left long enough).
Perhaps it is more of a concern to me because my property is SMALL and the
paths are right next to the house - there isn't anywhere else for them to
be. Then again, if one were to mulch the garden and by doing so, provide a
haven for earwigs, then one would have introduced a pest which damages
certain types of foliage. Let me know what your secret is.

Harry: The older culms (left over from 1996) on my bamboo are black.
Those that sprouted this August past are still green. I am interested to
see if they turn color at the ordinary interval, or if that interval is
stretched to allow for lack of activity during winter.

I bought this plant to provide dappled shade, quickly, to an area where I
had removed a large tree. Needless to say, the plants I hoped to protect
with the shade comprise some of the most ragged primroses and crispy hostas
in the area, by the time midsummer rolls around. The bamboo is not growing
upward with the speed I had anticipated!
