Welcome Sandy, I am less that a hundred miles from you. I understand about
your heavy clay. It can be a real problem during summer especially where
there are large trees to take moisture from everything growing around them.
We have had some success by working huge amounts of fine composted pine bark
into the soil. Of course the results are raised beds. It helps to keep the
soil loose so that it can absorb water more readily. It also helps to retain
moisture in the summer yet allows for drainage in the winter.

We are growing quite a collection of shade plants. Our major plant is
hosta,
followed by hardy ferns, heucheras, tiarellas, hardy orchids, primulas,
alstroemeria, shade grasses, violas, asarum, and other wild flowers. As you
will soon discover we can not grow some of the things that do well north of
us. Our garden is at Ooltewah Tn. Oltewah is 11 miles N. of the Georgia
line. You are invited up to see our garden. Since we are away for cutleaf
shows, sales, the Hosta Convention, etc. Contact us before coming. phone
