[SHADEGARDENS] Indoor shade

Hellow SG,

Is indoor shade acceptable as a topic?

Living in the North Pole, I have lately become interested in plants that will
flower indoors in the winter months. I have a glassed in room with skylights
kept at about 55 degrees. In the NY-New England area this winter we have seen
no sun since early in November when we had the first snowfall. The temp. in
my space closes out gesneriads and like plants.

In that glassed room w/o lights plants can languish until March, many do not
do well in the grey days we have to offer. In the last year I have acquired
neomarica plants which naturally grow in shaded areas of tropical zones.

One, neomarica gracilis, purchased as a healthy seedling from Logee's
(www.logees.com ) (catalog online w/ lots of pictures) last July has grown
into a small clump with three flowerstalks in a natural light (unfortunately
no sun) window in that cold room. Three flowerstalks in January is cause to
open a bottle of wine. There are several other species and I have acquired n.
northiana (very fragrant). I have started seed of n. caerulea (hoping) all
shade plants in their native areas.

Morea, Dietes and species forms of gladiolus also bloom in winter, indoors in
cool spaces. Humidity does not seem to be a factor.

Anyone else have winter blooming indoor plants that don't need the sun that we
do not have?
