Dear friends,
I may have mastered "HOW" to shut up. "WHEN" is tougher. The emphasis on
"There are NO shade-loving plants," repeated many times to hopefully nail
down a TRUTH, deserves at least a comment.
WebCrawler lists 52,016 files on LOVE, but alas only 18,517 on TRUTH.
Random House Unabridged lists 28 definitions for LOVE, but alas only 12 for
LOVE. LOVE wins.
Picking the right file or the right definition gets chancy. You could
easily be accused of leaning. The definitions of LOVE don't quite limit the
activity to Homo sapiens.
TRUTH is not always a liberating experience. The enfant terrible, with his
shameless love of truth, and the raw country-bred girl who always says what
she means, and the plain, blunt man who makes a point of speaking his mind
on every possible occasion, without ever considering whether he has a mind
at all, are the fatal examples of what simplicity leads to. - Wilde
The truth is rarely pure and never simple. Modern life would be very
tedious if it were either.... - Wilde
Young mountains were we all but once
Thrust up from sources little known
At once the glory, now a dunce,
Truth, eventually has us mown. - P Aden
The dialogue by this group on LOVE was most useful. I am glad that the
original quote did not substitute SEX for LOVE.
I could discuss many factors involved in shade preference that were LEFT
OUT of the original quote. But it's high time for me to practice the art of
"shutting up."
Best, Paul
