Cindy,
Like Bill Nash, I think Pro-Mix is a good starting medium for hosta seeds. I tend to think that it dries out a bit too fast in my growing space, so I add about 40% by volume black potting soil. I think Sherryl and others are right that over watering can be a problem as well as other things. The nursery down the street starts his open-pollinated hosta seeds outdoors in pots filled with soil from the field. He doesn't worry about sterilzation or anything and his seedlings are gorgeous. I suspect that gardening often has more art than science and much of what we each do is superstitious behavior. We did something and it worked so we tend not to make too many changes. I'm certain if anyone watched me do my thing, they would be both illuminated and totally amused, and I'm a scientist...
Good luck,
Steve Chamberlain
