Vicky,
I believe it is Acer pamatum dissectum 'Crimson Queen' from Patsy Stygal's garden. I grow this cultivar here in zone 5- (4/5a). I make certain to mulch the base and roots well and go out of my way to water it when there is no snow cover so that the roots won't dry out and be cold-damaged. Thus far, I've had 5 years of no ill effects. Most of the catalogs list Zone 6 for this cultivar, but a few list Zone 5. At any rate, as I understand it, the problem is not die-back of the foliage, but rather root kill.
(I've planted 14 cultivars of Acer palmatum, so I'll see who lives and who doesn't.)
Most people think that a bit of shade is useful for these cultivars. The further south, the more shade is needed. However, there are some huge gorgeous examples in central Pennsylvania growing in full sun.
Cheers,
Steve Chamberlain
