Hi Vicky,
The Acer p. d. you refer to on the cover of Shady Oaks catalog, is growing in
my garden. I am zone 5b. I am currently trying to find my records to
properly identify this dissectum as several people have written, wanting the
name of the variety. It is one of five varieties brought to me from Japan by
a friend approx. 12 years ago. It is a variegated form so it is unlike A. p.
d. 'Crimson Queen'. The leaves are also lacier than 'Crimson Queen'. I grow
this tree in open shade, in a rather micro-climate situation. Brick walls
surround it's growing area, providing needed shelter. I moved this poor tree
so many times trying to find the right spot, and must have lost the label
during one of the moves.
This variety is not as hardy as 'Crimson Queen', which I also grow. 'Crimson
Queen' is grown in full sun. If you can provide some shelter, give this
variety a try. I have seen it growing in zone 4.
Regards
