Dear Vicky:
I live in zone 5a, and I about 10 Acer's. In general, they are okay through
zone 5.
In reading some of the response, the japanese maples suffer from very little
die back. Most importantly is to heavy mulch the root zone. I use pine
needles only because I have a lot of mature eastern white pines that drop
their needles. I use upwards of a 4 inches.
Your second question: Red leafed acers need some sun to keep there good
color. The greens, too need sun and take more sun than the reds.
The dwarf weeping japanese maples make great garden statements either as a
focal point or as a background tree.
Last thought...try some in expensive ones to see how they do.
