Re: [SHADEGARDENS] Hello, Chick!

Dear Carolyn & homebound hostaphiles,

Metro Detroit Hosta Society has sponsored a public garden since its inception
4 years ago. It is located on the grounds of the Birmingham Congregational
Church in southeast Michigan. Actually, there was a small hosta garden
already there that we adopted and added to. Noteable is a new garden in honor
of Pauline Banyai, the "Hosta Lady" who introduced many plants including Gold
Standard. We are trying to have every plant she introduced in this garden.

There have been plants stolen, and our members who have been most active in
working on this project have duplicate plants in their private gardens so
replacements are available. These projects are funded by the Society and we
make our money from plant sales in the spring.

Michigan Hosta Society also has been involved with a project in conjunction
with Michigan State University at Hidden Lake Gardens in Tipton, MI. It is
called the Hosta Hillside and is dedicated to Herb and Dorothy Benedict of
Hillsdale, MI, who are deservedly famous for the many hosta introductions over
the years ('Dorothy Benedict' was the one that brought $3000.00 at the
National last year.) The Hosta Hillside is one of two recognized display
gardens in the country. Unfortunately, plants do regularily disappear from
this garden as well.

MHS has a regular annual meeting at the Hillside in August every year where
there is major clean-up and planting duties, and tons of mulch (literally!) is
spread throughout the garden. This is in the morning, and after consuming a
self-provided picnic lunch, the MAIN EVENT occurs: a plant acution. I won't
say its frenzied, but a few people do get carried away. We have folks from
Ohio, Indiana, Illinois and wisconsin who show up for all the fun, and Herb
and Dorothy are usually there enjoying the spectical.

Hope this is what you are looking for.

Jim Dixon, President
Metro Detroit Hosta Society
