I have two lovely Japanese maples--'Bloodgood' and an unlabeled
one--doing well in zone 5b. They get high light but "dappled
protection" (phrase intended to communicate rather than provide grist
for the semantic argument mill) from a large old locust. Also, I had
read that planting Japanese maples in the SOUTHEAST of your garden if
helpful for zone 5 to 6 iffiness because of protection from winter
winds.
