I read in the current issue of THE AMERICAN GARDENER (publication of the
American Hort Society) that Historic Bartram's Garden in Philadelphia is
conducting a nationwide census of Franklinia alatamaha trees in honor of
the 300th anniversary of Bartram's birth. As you all probably know, John
Bartram discovered this tree in Georgia and collected seeds in 1765; less
than 50 years later the Franklinia was extinct in the wild. All specimens
known today come from the seeds that Bartram collected.
Anybody who is lucky enough to have one of these trees is urged to
register it. The garden is trying to learn the cultural preference, range,
and potential dimensions of this difficult to grow tree (mine did not
survive for long, alas). To receive a census form or more information,
call 215/729-5281 or visit
