No, they are not the same plant.
Buttonbush (CEPHALANTHUS occidentalis). Shrubby plant growing near edge of
water in Eastern U.S. About 10' in height. Creamy white rounded flower heads.
Buttonwood (PLATANUS occidentalis) American Plane-tree. About 100' in height,
an Eastern U.S. tree. There is also Oriental Plane-tree (orientalis) and
California Plane-tree(racemosa)
