Re: [SG] astilbe question


Claire, I don't know whether they require a lot of water (better heads will
advise) but I have had varying luck under the massive butternut tree with
astilbe.  I think it has to do with the pattern of the tree roots  (picked
that tidbit up from Mike Ruggerio some yrs ago)
In any event, some do real well for no obvious reason - they're all in shade
and they all get the same amount of water (or lack of it)  Have you tried the
small Hettie Graafland or Inschriach Pink - pink  plumes nestled close to the
foliage, which is finely serrated,  very dark green, and satiny.  They do as
well as Sprite and pumila, and the foliage is so
intriguing - clear pink flowers are a plus
