Claire,
I think it's been mentioned, but just in case, I grow a. chinensis pumila in
some of the driest areas of my garden. I consistently comes up, blooms when
it is moist, them dies back after bloom when it gets really dry in Illinois.
I do grow it in low light, it really doesn't get anything but dappled sun.
Now I also have some growing in quite a bit of sun, but very moist conditions.
The plant is larger, has a larger, fuller bloom, but still looks ratty by the
end of July. A couple I planted in moist conditions were not happy at all and
died. I think it's really important for astilbes to have air as well as
moisture. They really resent heavy soil. Would everyone agree to that? I
have had better luck in dry places, than trying really moist places (However,
most of the soil in my moist areas is pretty heavy).
