Bobbi,
You brought up another good point about astilbes that hasn't been mentioned
yet. They do seem to need dividing regularly to do well. I think it's the
nature of their roots. They seem to be woody, almost. They make almost a mat
of roots very quickly and that probably prevents water from getting down where
it is needed after a couple of years.
