I, too, am a fan of ivy. Guess I've got about 20 different cultivars in
the ground or in pots waiting to go in the ground. A good deal of ground,
as well as many old trees and a couple sides of my house are covered in it.

To Marge and other hedera fans,

I must apologize to all of you that are struggling with aggressive ivy. Up
here on the mountain it must be invited cordially to survive.

Tripping in the UK I have seen ivy used in such creative ways. Using a
vigorous form the ivy is plant at each side of a proposed archway. You grow
several vines to a desired height and then train it horizontally for the width
of the archway. The arch can be as long as desired, the ivy is sheared to
look neat. It is somewhat similar to the backyard use of grapevines in small
city gardens except the ivy will prosper in shade. Eventually the ivy will
stand on it's own, needing no support frame.

Alas, in the garden one always desires that which does not want to grow for
you.

The many variegated forms are less vigorous than the greens. Squaw Mountain
in Oregon has lots of cv's and it is fun to add them to container plantings.
They are superior indoor shade plants for a cool place.
