Hi Marilyn- Yes , the black mondo grass does grow well in shade but as far as spreading you need to be patient or buy a bunch of it. In my experience it grows very slowly. I know both Plant Delights and Heronswood have it in their 1999 catalogs(I looked because Im tired of being patient waiting for a big spread and am ordering some)
