Cold zone notes

You might post a few conditions.  There are not many really cold gardens on
this list but Paul, we in zones 3 and 4 need all the help we can get.

One factor I have observed is the shortness of frost free growing days.  100
to 120 days does always allow the full cycle of growth of certain plants.
These plants live well but do not ripen seed or attain full height.  Kalmia is
one, it blooms only every other year and does not complete the ripening of
seed.
