Depends on the fern. Some species stay evergreen (though in your climate
they might look pretty ratty by winter's end) and some are deciduous. You
need to know the species you are planting to determine if they will be
evergreen or die back.
For example, Christmas Fern (Polystichum acrostichoides) would stay green
for you. So might the Autumn Fern (Dryopteris erythrosorus). Cinnamon
Fern (Osmonda cinnamonea) and Ostrich Fern (Matteucia struthiopteris) are
two large ferns that die back completely.
Search the web for Shady Oaks Nursery. They have a good selection of ferns
and are very reliable.
