Depends on which species you grow.  Some are evergreen, but most that are
easily found are deciduous.  Christmas Fern (Polystichum acrostichoides) is
evergreen and a makes a very nice mound of foliage - tough as nails for me,
tolerates dry woodland conditions, too; native to North America and Canada.
 If you're just starting out with ferns, this would be a good one to try;
it's also pretty readily available.

Foliage Gardens specializes in ferns and proprietors are highly regarded on
Fernet...has information on ferns and sells them.  I've never bought there,
but have no problem suggesting you take a peek - should give you some

One can never have too many ferns IMHO...
