Re: [SG] ferns

Hello Kris,
You have already heard from Marge and Bill with their suggestions on
ferns. I would like to add the hairy Lip fern to the list of evergreen
types. This little fellow seems to get neglected by all. It is one of my
favorites. Will take a bit more light than the others if you have a
somewhat open location. It only gets 8 to 10 inches high forms a clump
slowly and is a silvery green from the hairs. Turns a plum color in the
winter. My favorite after this one for evergreen is the Autumn fern Bill
mentioned. Great in the way it changes colors in the spring and then again
in the fall of the year. Christmas fern is the backbone fern of any shade
garden.
For deciduous ferns I like the ones that "do" something besides green.
Japanese Painted Fern is number one on the list with silver, lime green,
burgundy fronds. I also like Clayton Interrupted and Cinnamon Ferns for
their brown wooly decorations in spring. Crested Ferns of any type are
always interesting and definitely different in appearance from the normal
run. Just to mention a few....
