Re: hydrangeas

Kay,

Sorry this is so late, been behind on my email.

I also grow 'Pia'. The nursery I bought it from says it is a 'true' pink
- doesn't matter what the Ph is, will always be pink. I liked it when I
saw it at the nursery partly because the individual flowers in the mop
were bigger than others I'd seen.

In regards to pruning - mine starts from scratch each year. I bought
mine late summer (I think) of '98. That fall all I had was brown
stems/stalks. (Sorry for any wrong terminology, I'm still in the early
stages of learning all this "gardening stuff".) So, I pruned it back to
a couple of inches. The next day I asked my sister about pruning it and
she said not to, and then in the spring to scratch the stalks to see if
they are green underneath. At this point I figured I'd killed the poor
thing. Well, next spring it started all new growth.

Last fall I didn't do any pruning. This spring it started growing from
scratch - new growth from the ground up - and the scratch test didn't
reveal any green on last year's stalks. I then cut off the old stalks.

So far, this year it is about 1 1/2' tall and about 2' wide. It has no
blooms yet. Had a couple last year.

The only other hydrangea I have is an Oakleaf. The only pruning done on
it is what I know to definitely be dead. I got it at the same time as
the 'Pia' and it is doing great. These are the only two hydrangeas I
have, so far. There is another one I would like to get sometime, though.
It has burgundy in the middle of the leaves. If memory serves me right,
the variety name starts with a 'P' and has some 'Zs' in it somewhere.
