Amsonia yellows fairly early here - then holds that color through fall. Sometimes it
withers by late summer, but will be back again next spring.
Re: "Bad Experience" - you say your clematises look dormant...perhaps they are. At
least one company (Burpee) sends many of their perennials in a state of induced
dormancy. If you put the plants under lights in a warm area, they will 'wake up' right
away, but if you plant them out right away (if it's especially hot), they may stay
dormant for the season and come back in the spring.
