I live in mid Missouri, USDA zone 5b. Loving hydrangeas as I do, I have
tried to pay special attention to where they are planted as I drive
around town.
I have noticed that the ones that truly flourish here are planted on the
north side of structures. There is a mophead just up the street from me
on the north side of a church. It is *huge* and had big, beautiful,
blue blooms earlier in the year. This would follow with what Marge
posted earlier - that they bloom on old wood and are sensitive to spring
frosts. Being on the north side of buildings would keep them from
budding out too soon.
