There are probably a hundred more in this southern list. Of course YOU, you
lucky dog, get to plant tree ferns and other wonders from the jungles, so
I'm not feeling sorry for you (except that you don't have hosta)....

Diann: I was laughing when I read your response....I really love hosta's and
gave them a honest effort. They were in my garden for nearly five growing
seasons and did "ok" for the first three but we had nice winters (I still
think that the hosta's like that sleeping period) AND since I didn't want
them to just wither and die I gave them a new home. She's a caring lady and
takes her gardening very seriously - I think she will make a great home for
them. The Kaempferia's and Calathea's have proven to be a good alternative
to my desire for hosta's....it's still not the same but I have to work with
the climate I have.

The Australian Tree Ferns - yes, I have had the beautiful Aussie Tree
Ferns...it grew in my garden for three years until it passed on last summer.
We went out of town and the sprinkler was placed on a child's table to ensure
full coverage....it was set on a timer. The timer worked but the sprinkler
had fallen off of the table and Australian Tree Ferns can't take 10 days in
July without water. Before passing on it's fronds were literally taller than
my 5'6"'s. The spot is still available for a replacement but I refuse to pay
$35+ for a nice Aussie Fern...I'll wait until September when they go on sale,
often as much as 50%. I'll overwinter it in it's pot and plant it next
spring.
