Re: Cimicifuga help??

Hello Diann,
For those of you having problems growing Fairycandles, try the Cimicifuga
acerina... Mapleleaf fairycandles (bugbane). Shorter that the others at two feet
when in bloom. Mostly is a clump of glossy maple shaped leaves until about now
when it sends up long stems to bloom. I find it very dependable here in my garden.
Like all Cimicifuga don't let it severely dry out just as it is coming into bloom.
Mine is up on a hillside in heavy soil along with hardy begonia, ferns, Tricyrtis.
I also have the species in the garden and have had it for many years. Now huge
clumps of foliage and in bloom. C. atropurpurea is growing for me, but is not
getting enough light in the spot where I planted it. Also will be running out of
room before long. C. Brunette I have I have in two locations (3 in each). May be a
while before they bloom. These are from tissue culture and take a while to bulk
up.
Incidentally, unless the nursery grew Cimicifuga on for a while before you
got them patience is going to be required. They can take 4 to 5 years from seed to
bloom, transplanting may set them back one year as well. Mostly TC is being used
on the fancy ones, so you should not have to wait too long before blooms.
This plant is really not all that fussy. Much like any other perennial. Some
species do perform better in one area than another, though....
