I believe that to be the case and as it stands it is the best ending for what
would have been a vast amount of work for a a few individuals.  All the
societies are hurting for volunteeer labor.  Most end up being the domain of
a few zealots with the ranks trying hard to contribute a bit but not too
much.  Gardeners who are also employed and have families are very hard put to
give time to meetings, newsletters and shows.

If any of us have benefited by plant society memberships we certainly owe the
individuals who keep it going.  Some other system or sponsorship by a large
and well financed  botanic garden needs to be considered.  I do not have any
specific proposal but I can say that I have put in many hours and am
unwilling to do so again.
