I think one of the reasons they call hostas the friendship plant is because
they are so easy to divide and share with a friend. You don't even have to
take them out of the ground if you don't want. I've stuck a sharp shovel in
the center of the clump and removed only one side. You lose a little, but it
recovers pretty quickly. And best of all, the other side remains undisturbed
and now has room to grow.
Depending on the variety and how mature it is, removing every other one does
not always mean the one you left will fill in. If a hosta gets 4 feet wide,
and they are at maturity, removing the center is just removing the center.
The two on the side will not suddenly decide they get 6 feet wide....
Having said that, doesn't mean you can't plant some other interesting
perennial there.... :-)
