Re: shadegardens Digest - 3 Jul 2003 to 8 Jul 2003 (#2003-50)

Paul, thanks for the comments. These were a collection (the full sized,
not the minis) from WFF some five or so years ago, so I don't know the
names. There were three of each of four or five varieties, so we had
edged the beds on two sides with three of the same hosta in a row, about
three feet apart at the time. Now the leaves are touching. They don't
look bad ... I am just thinking about future growth.

Some years ago I put in a beautiful line of hostas around two sides of a
shade bed under an ash tree and they have done so well that they are
starting to crowd each other. It is better to let them continue
overlapping, divide individual plants and replant a small piece of each,
or remove every other large one in between so the line remains large
looking?

If they are the same plant and they look good to you-just leave them
alone. A thick mono culture will do just fine for many years. If they
look overly
congested for your taste-then remove every other one. This will allow
the
plants left in the ground to stay large and fill in next year.

Do you know which Hosta you have, and how far apart yours are spaced?
For me the large types grow 5 to 6 feet wide and the mediums 3 feet
wide.
