If they are the same plant and they look good to you-just leave them alone.
A thick mono culture will do just fine for many years.  If they look overly
congested for your taste-then remove every other one.   This will allow the
plants left in the ground to stay large and fill in next year.

Do you know which Hosta you have, and how far apart yours are spaced?  For me
the large types grow 5 to 6 feet wide and the mediums 3 feet wide.
