George asked how far north gunnera can grow.
There are two enormous gunnera at Tofino, on the west coast of Vancouver Island, Canada. This area is often frost-free. It has high rainfall, (about 3 metres or 120 inches), and fogs during summer mornings. The lot is an ordinary sized one, maybe 50 feet wide. There is a central path to the front door, and one gunnera on each side of it, so that the entire front garden is taken up by the two of them.
