Kay,
I have one bed that has several hostas that have shown symptoms of nematodes.
The diagnosis is very easy as they affect more than one leaf and the
discoloration is limited to space between two veins. Look at the hosta library or
Mark Zilis' book for pictures.

While up at Van Wade's last week I discussed the absence of any symptoms of
nematodes there and asked how this could be. I was told that they do a routine
spray of cygon. Several experts that I have talked to have told me that
nematodes were kept at bay with all the heavy duty sprays that were used
previously in the nursery trade. Now that all of those have been declared unsafe and
taken off the market the nematode population has really taken off.

I am using a systemic rose granule on the soil and am spraying the one bed.
I really hate spraying as the finches live all around and forage in my beds so
I am limiting my spraying to save the birds. I would hate to have to choose
between the birds and the hostas.
