As I've been trying to catch up on this list, I read this post and it got
my curiosity up, so I asked Gardens-L if anyone was successfully growing
Hosta in a warmer zone than 7, knowing that there are people on that list
from all over the map. Several replied and it appears that they grow in
zone 8 with no problem. One respondent is growing them in northern
Louisiana; one near Myrtle Beach, SC; one in Wilmington, NC. One, in zone
9, Florida has no luck, but says a friend, who lives farther south in
Florida than she, grows them with some success.
So, FWIW, I'd suggest that southern US zone 8 is probably more like the
southern growing extreme for Hosta with zone 9 being iffy, although Dave
Skinner, who hosts Le Jardin Ombragé web site (all about his garden in
Tallahassee, FL) lists 20 hosta as growing in his garden. His site may be
of interest to any of you from the deep south as he has a tour, photos and
tables of plants he grows as well as those that did not do well for him.
URL to his front page is : http://www.nettally.com/skinnerd/ombrage.html
For some reason, it's best viewed with Netscape, as his java applets don't
work in IE.
