Good morning gardeners. Different Hostas are rated for different zones.
For example "Hosta kikutii var. yakusimensis" zone 5; "Hosta rectifolia"
zone 4. My opinion is Hostas will do pretty well most places providing
they have proper growing medium, drainage, shade and do not get fried in
the summer, and can go dormant in winter. Zone 8 in Texas is not the same
as Zone 8 in Pacific Northwest. Hostas grow well here (for obvious
reasons-moisture); I am not so sure about sites in zone 8 Texas.
The problem of defining zones by min temp range. One of the
best Hosta nurseries I have been at was in Ohio (zone 5 I think) The
temperature was high 80's, but the planting site was in shade, good soil,
and moisture source.
Dick Woodway, WA zone 8
PS We have a slug race event tomorrow...No lack of contestants
