Christine & Sheila:
One year I decided to move my Florida Elephant Ears---I dug them up so that I
could plant something else...well I couldn't find the right spot for my bulbs
so I simply laid them on a table outside in the shade (must have been around
August). Well when we started to get colder weather and frost warnings I
carried the bulbs into my husband's garage and layed them on the shelf and
never thought about them again. The next April my husband was cleaning his
garage and wanted to know if I wanted the bulbs and I told him yes and
planted them by my greenhouse (home now for two years)......they were up and
growing within a couple of weeks. I guess the moral of this story is that if
you plant them in the ground during the warmer months and enjoy their grand
size - after the first frost you could easily clean them off and store them
on a shelf in a closet until warmer days. The shelf life of these bulbs is
apparently long.
Sheila - you mentioned these plants possibly being sensitive to the days
length...I know when I have visited Florida (subtropical) the elephant ears
are still there but they are not near as grand as in the summer time heat.
I hope this may help just a little
