I need a referral to someone who knows something about bees...have tried
internet sites with no luck...granted these bees are in the sun, but I
thought maybe some shady gardeners might be able to help...here is the
problem:
In the late fall of 1997, I had a bucket of composting manure. For winter I
mixed it with some soil and
pine bark mulch, piled it on a area of my patio (and gardening projects
area) and placed a black,
retangular plastic "tub" used use mixing cement upside down on top of
the pile. In the spring/summer of
1998, I realized that bees had set up a household in this pile. Since
they were non-agressive, I let them
be...figuring they would find a better spot next year. In the spring
summer of 1999, I found they are still
there, still non-agressive. One warm day I went out on the patio and
heard a loud buzzing, I checked the
bees and there they were frantically beating their wings trying to cool
down their hive unde a black
plastic top. I rigged a shade over the black plastic and rasie one
corner about an inch to increase
ventilation. I have not seen them buzzing like that since (but today is
supposed to get to 103-105 and I
am worried about them. What can I do? Who could help move them without
killing them (which is what
most folks would tell me to do...but why kill them? :( I really don't
know anything about bees. There
appears to be several different types/colors - some look like "sweat"
bees relatively small, yesterday a
larger one came out looking more like a bumble bee black and bright
yellow...but not as big as a bumble
bee. Any suggestions/information appreciated. Thanks
