The spots are in rows parallel with the body of the caterpillar. They are
all over, not just on the center back. As Jaime said, there are larvae of
several skippers and at least one butterfly that feed only on baptisia,
plus I guess still more that feed on any legume. I have checked
BUTTERFLIES OF INDIANA, which does not picture the larval stage,
unfortunately. I'll try to find a caterpillar ID book. Meanwhile, it
appears it is something nice, and not too destructive, so I'm glad I
didn't nuke 'em.
