This a large salvia with beautiful blue flowers. It blooms repeatedly here
and overwinters - two things salvia usually don't do in zone 4. The plant
has large dark green leaves but is sort of floppy. It grows well for me in
one half day of morning sun. If you like combinations something yellow,
perhaps a perennial coreopsis, looks good planted in the same space. The
plant can then "weave" through the yellow of the coreopsis.
The only thriving perennial salvia here had been "Purple Rain", the nemorosas
never prospered so this one was a surprise to me.
Salvias and penstemons, two genera that are not northeastern specialties.

the Salvia x nemorosa and veronicas I have given up on as almost useless
plants-they flower once and just look like a messy clump of leaves but Salvia
transylvanica just is a great plant, I love the large plants with its deep
blue, claw shaped flowers-long lived and not a fussy grower.
I have not had a problem with it being floppy but maybe because I have grown
it in dry soils.
Salvia vercituclata 'purple rain' i like too but it is not a good seller so I
am dropping it.
I have grown the pure white form and even though this salvia is not a
knock-em dead type plant, it has it's appeal for me. Though this one tends
to be a tad bit too floppy.
