Mary:
A plant afflicted with Southern Blight will have its outer leaves laying
flat on the ground. They may look fine, but they are FLAT and when you tug
at them they readily separate from the crown. The inner leaves look OK,
and ARE OK for the time being. Treat with a 10% solution of clorox in H20
and the plant may recover. If not, repeat treatment about 3 days later.
It does no harm to treat any hostas growing next to the patient, also.
Hot weather definitely seems to trigger the fungus. Only scattered hostas
will be affected at any one time, not all of them. Doesn't sound like what
you have is Southern Blight, if they all just generally look "ratty." Your
hostas could just be too dry, or suffering from the heat.
