If you don't mind a really great workout, this works for me (I only do
this once in a while, not over acres or anything). I let the stump set a
year and then chop it out with an axe. If you have a lot, perhaps you can
rent a stump grinder from a tool rental store.
Once I saw in a magazine a weeder that was like a blowtorch, had propane
and just burned the weeds to death by direct application of flame. This
might be an interesting solution, but I would imagine that on the really
tough stuff you might have to do it more than once before the root is
killed.
