I'll second the question about whether they did fine the first year
and never returned...
Don't know about bare roots from Costco, but Bluestone sends (or used
to) small, liner plants who, I have found, need some time in a
holding bed or larger pots to put on some growth before planting in a
border with mature plants in it. It's not that there's anything
wrong with their plants. On the contrary, they've always been
healthy and growing strongly for me, but they are small plants and
easily swamped by larger, older neighbors...
It's not that you need an established huge clump to start with, but
you need to make sure that baby plants have some air space around
them. It's so easy to lose track of them until you remember and it's
too late - all you find is a limp leaf buried under some robust
foliage belonging to someone else - or worse, a label and
nothing....been down that road several times.
