there any peculiarities about it?
The place I am going to plant it gets lot's of light, but only full sun
about 2 - 3 hours at mid day, is that OK? I want to keep it trimmed to about
5' - 7', is that OK? >>

I have been growing the Hamelia patens for about 5 years now but it has been
in full sun. I started with a small 4" pot and now my plant reaches a good
7' tall or so. I have been able to shape mine with pruning without any
trouble. Mine dies back to the ground each year, even in the mildest
winters, but comes back with great vigor each year.
Last year mine grew so big that I pruned from the bottom making the bush more
of a tree allowing me to plant below. It's a beauty.
I would certainly be up for trying a part shade condition for this plant
because even when not in bloom the red stems are very striking.
