Re: Evergreens and other Questions

Karen, that was good advice for everybody. Thanks! A question--When you
say Pagoda Dogwood, do you mean Cornus kousa? Does this tree produce
seedlings? That grow fast?? If so, hot diggety!

Speaking of Queen of the Prairie (Filipendula rubra), I saw some in bloom
at the Missouri Botanical Garden in St Louis this weekend. What a yummy
color it is, and what a statement it makes in the garden! I also saw
bugbane (Cimicifuga racemosa) growing and blooming in quite a lot of shade
there. Groups of that look very good, and again, it is big and impressive.

Another suggestion for Tammy: Evergreen shrubs that perform in shade would
include first and foremost, Taxus or Yew. They can be sculpted into shapes
to look formal, or left natural, and different cultivars are available
with upright or spreading forms. I have an upright one that I have managed
to prune into an Xmas tree shape that contrasts nicely with some deciduous
azaleas. A useful if not exciting shrub.

By the way, do you all say "taxus" or do you say "yew"?
