Kris, I hope you do not mind if I try to make an answer to your question?
ASTILBE do best in half day sun in moist soils. That said what I tell those
that want to buy ASTILBE is that they need to plant it in an area that will
have enough light to grow grass fairly well. The one main requirement is
that they do not like dry soils. If plants dry out in the spring-they will
not bloom or only produce a few flowers on the "spike" with most of the
flower turning brown.
The chances types are more tolerant of dryer soils.
Plants grown in open shade with no sun might produce 3-5 flowering stems
while those grown in half day sun might produce 30-40 flowering stems.
In shade the flower colors are washed out, so plant the darker colors and
stay away from the soft pinks.
