<< Paul,
When you mention moist soils for astilbe I think it probably should be
mentioned that it needs to be an open, easily drained soil. They don't like
boggy conditions. Also, they are heavy feeders and need to be divided
regularly because they will deplete the soil in a few years time. What do
you mean by "the chances types are more tolerant of dryer soils"?

A typo on my part, it should have said "chinensis" types. They bloom later
than the others and include "Visions," "taquetii" forms and a number of other
nice plants.
They will do very well in "wet" soils as long as the soils are not to oxygen
deprived.
To me boggy means wet organic soils which are poor in oxygen and nutrient
poor.
They are not for soils that are water logged or have standing water for any
length of time.
If you want to use them in moist/wet soils give them plenty of sun.
Yes, they need to be divided every few years, they develop a large woody
crown and cutting up that crown induces new shoot formation, rejuvenating the
plant.
