Paul,
When you mention moist soils for astilbe I think it probably should be
mentioned that it needs to be an open, easily drained soil. They don't like
boggy conditions. Also, they are heavy feeders and need to be divided
regularly because they will deplete the soil in a few years time. What do
you mean by "the chances types are more tolerant of dryer soils"?
