Summerlong flowering penstemon

This information is from an interesting article in the June '99 issue
of Horticulture.
Penstemons: the All-American Perennial by Lauren Springer

The photos are beautiful, including one of a P. digitalis "Husker
Red" with deep purple foliage, unlike the pallid seedlings sold
around here.

Anyway, the plant that fits the bill for a low-growing shade plant
that flowers all summer is Penstemon richardsonii "a subshrub with
profuse, blue-gray, hollylike serrated foliage, sends up
lipstick-pink flowers for four months. It takes light shade in
regions with hot summers."
