Re: other pests: leafhoppers / spittle bugs.

We are having an infestation of leaf hoppers / spittle bugs in our garden
this year. Normally we are pretty laisez faire about bugs- they can have
their bit and we have ours... but these are knocking down my 'Feverfew'
which at this time of the year is the back-bone of our garden.

Spittle appears at the base of the plant- after a day or so , whole
stalks keel over and lie on the ground--- the base of these stalks has
turned blackish.. if you try to prop them up again they generally
disconnect from the plant... they often disconnect even if you DON't
touch them. Also bad on Hollyhocks. When the spittle is washed away by
vigourous 'hosing', there are 6 or 8 bugs inside instead of the 1 or 2 we
are used to getting.

I suppose 'global warming' means more leaf-hoppers made it through the
winter than normally survive. Winter in Nova Scotia was dreary last year,
but it is generally milder than it has been.

Any suggestions, other that constant vigilance with the hose?
