Hello Karen,
    One of my favorite restrained groundcovers is Epimedium. There are so many to
choose from, easily grown and almost always lovely to behold. Be there in very
early spring in bloom, then emerging foliage usually in bronze tones, while you
are waiting for the Hosta to wake up. Great foliage companion to Host leaves.
There after your Host has gone dormant as well.
    Anemone nemorosa cultivars are wonderful, but go dormant around July when your
Host get into full gear for the season.
    European ginger is a great slowly spreading clumper with waxy, kidney-shaped
foliage, that would go great with lighter colored Host foliage.
    Green & Gold, or Chrysogonum, is great for weaving in and out of larger
plants. Decent foliage and bright yellow blooms.
